The blue bike pictured on the left has done extensive traveling. Initially, the bike was given to Socrates (on right) so that he could give it to his friend. Socrates and I met up on the UES on a sunny Saturday afternoon. He was excited to get this bike to his friend in the Bronx. He explained that his friend could use it to travel around his neighborhood. The transaction was friendly and simple. I did not think much of it afterwards.
About a month later, I received an email from Socrates about the blue bike. The first thing I noticed was this image attached to the email . I knew that Socrates’ friend in the Bronx was a male, but there was a woman in this picture. As I read the email, I learned that the guy from the Bronx could not accept the bike because it took up too much space in his apartment. Socrates then tried to ride the bike figuring he would use it. Unfortunately, he was a bit too big for the frame. FInally, Socrates gave the bike to Jane. She fits the bike perfectly and is super excited to have it.
Jane works for Metro World Child. This is a “a global faith-based, humanitarian organization dedicated to serving inner-city children throughout New York City and various urban centers around the world”. Check out their website here, to learn more. This is a fantastic organization with a fantastic staff. We are confident, through the grace of God, that another bike has been provided to the right person.
Socrates also sent Bike and Brain a short essay as to why he enjoys bicycles. It’s simply fantastic. Check it out below. Keep in mind that English is not Socrates’ primary language. To preserve the authenticity his piece has not been edited at all.
“To have a bike is good for several different and important reasons, among them: The first one worthy to consider is Health, as a first benefit. To ride a bike is an excellent exercise, that help the heart’s rhythm, to strengthen the muscles of the thigh and the muscles of the back, to reduce the stomach for the great amount of calories that is burned; It also helps the breathing system, and do some others that my capacity and knowledge cannot reach. A bicycle is a vehicle with two wheels that you ride by pushing the pedals with your feet. So, to have a bike is to have a vehicle to transport yourself, such as a car, a bus, a motorcycle, etc., even though the majority of people do not think that. But technically speaking it is. So that is the second thing I see and think about a bike.
The third benefit to consider is the one done in the environment with the pollution caused by the combustion and expelling of dioxide and other toxic gases by other vehicles; together with the saving of fuels, such as gasoline and gasoil. In other words saving resources of the nature.
One more benefit is in the economy, because if you have to go to a place a few blocks away from your house, and you go in your bike, you would have saved US$4.50 in the train (a round trip). By taxi, much more, maybe US$10.00 or US$12.00 (a round trip). Imagine that if you do this two times a week or more, how much money you could save or dedicate to another destiny?.
One last thing I would like to point out is the fact that society does not look at in a very good way a person who goes to work, to the university or some other places, because it sees a bike like a fake of a vehicle. But in Japan and some other advanced countries it is very different. Example of this is a friend of mine who made his specialty in Medicine in Japan. He was told that the Professor of that class at that moment was the number sixth in the world of that branch or area of the Medicine. My friend wanted to see that marvelous man, and he was looking at for the area of parking expecting a Limo or a very luxurious car. After some moments another student called, announcing the Professor had arrived; he thought how and from where did he arrive. When he entered to the classroom and saw the Professor, he remembered that man had passed in front of him, riding a bike, and he thought he was one of the janitors.
My final words are: Let’s use and ride bikes, in order to have and obtain the benefits previously mentioned, and some others that I didn’t mentioned”
