Did you know there are many different types of bicycles? Each one has unique features and purposes. There is a bike for almost every need. Not everyone is up to date on the different types of cycles. However, it is important to know the difference so that in case you decide to buy one you don’t end up with the wrong type. Below are a few of the most common bicycle types. (Note: This is not, in any way, a comprehensive list. There is a plethora of other bike types)
This is one of the more common bike types. Often times they have the drop handlebars, which resemble rams horns (pictured above). These bicycles have multiple speeds /gears. Additionally, road bikes have “skinny”/road tires, which usually limits them to riding on pavement. These bikes are usually built for the purposes of sport. People race with road bicycles, but they are not limited to just this purpose. Many people choose to use a road bike as their daily commuter because of it’s light weight and speed.
These bikes are a mix between road bikes and mountain bikes. They are built with comfort in mind. These bikes usually have flat handlebars and thicker tires. They are great for the daily commuter as they usually have all the eyelets/screw-holes to attach racks and fenders. Plus, with the thicker tires, they are good in the rain and snow. Hybrid bicycles usually have many gears.
Fixed Gear / Single Speed
The defining feature of these bicycles are that they do not have any gears. They are one single speed. The obvious downside to this is that it may be difficult to go up hills However, these bicycles require very little maintenance. These bikes are great for urban riding where the terrain is flat. Single speed bikes are also highly customizable. People treat these bicycles like an outfit and match them to their personality.
This looks a lot like a hybrid bicycle. A mountain bike usually has flat/straight handlebars (pictured above) as well as thick tires. Sometimes these bicycles will have disc brakes as they need strong stopping power when traveling down hills. Mountain bikes may also have shocks on the front forks (pictured above). Mountain bikes are for people looking to do trail and off-road riding.
These are built for comfort. These bikes are as much about style as they are about functionality. Often times you will see cruiser with baskets, coffee holders, and racks. Cruisers are not built for speed or off-road adventures. These are popular for city and beach riding. Cruisers usually have sloping down tubes and mustache handlebars (pictured above). Cruisers may have multiple gears but sometimes are single speed.
